Britney Spears’ legal troubles spark sobriety and family support efforts
The 'Criminal' hitmaker is set to appear in court on May 4 as she continues her path toward recovery
Britney Spears has reportedly been sober for three weeks following her recent arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence in Ventura County, California.
The 44-year-old pop star was taken into custody earlier this month after police said she was driving erratically during an hour-long pursuit.
A 911 caller described Spears as “all over the road,” prompting officers to track her vehicle until it came to a stop. Authorities reported that Spears appeared “disoriented” when approached and was later booked before being released.
Following the incident, Spears’ team called the arrest a “wake-up call” and said it would lead to “long overdue change” in her life. A representative told Us Weekly:
“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for wellbeing.”
Spears shares her sons, Preston, 20, and Jayden, 19, with her ex-husband Kevin Federline. She is scheduled to appear in court on May 4 in connection with the DUI charges.
The arrest has reignited concern among fans, especially as Spears, who was freed from a long-standing conservatorship in 2021, has been largely out of the public eye in recent months.
Her ex-husband, Sam Asghari, whom she married in 2022 and divorced the following year, urged privacy for the pop star. Speaking to Fox News, Asghari said:
“When it comes to people making mistakes, I understand that. I think that everyone deserves privacy. And I hope the press has learned from the past, that they give her the privacy that she needs.”
