Fresh insights have surfaced regarding an Iowa man accused of orchestrating his wife's murder and subsequently carrying out the act.
James Martin, 47, faces charges of first-degree murder in the killing of his 41-year-old wife, Amber Martin. He was detained in Johnson County Jail in January with a bond set at $1 million.
On January 16, in the 2800 block of Spring Rose Circle in Coralville, Iowa, James Martin allegedly plotted to end his wife's life.
"In the hours leading to the victim's demise, the defendant devised a plan to kill her," detectives reported in a complaint obtained by Law&Crime.
"He armed himself with a kitchen knife and ambushed the victim as she left another room, stabbing her multiple times."
Police responded to the Coralville apartment, situated in Iowa's eastern region, around 6:40am following stabbing reports. Upon arrival, officers discovered Amber Martin with numerous stab wounds, and she was declared dead at the scene.
This week, officials disclosed more information about the case, notably that James Martin's mother allegedly witnessed the distressing incident.
According to Cedar Rapids-based ABC affiliate KCRG, the mother informed authorities that she arrived at the apartment around 1:00am that night due to her son's deteriorating mental state.
She mentioned falling asleep on the couch but was awakened by noises coming from the laundry room.
Initially assuming it was the couple's cat, she then heard cries for help. Moving closer, although it was dark, she reportedly saw her son attacking her daughter-in-law.
The mother reportedly rushed in, imploring James Martin to stop. When he finally halted, she couldn’t locate her phone and instructed him to contact the police.
Upon entering the home, officers discovered a blood-stained knife in the kitchen sink, along with smeared blood and bloodied clothing. It was stated that James Martin confessed to the murder.
The suspect was taken into custody, and investigators attempted to determine his motive.
Authorities reported that James Martin claimed he stabbed his wife to "relieve her suffering," according to KCRG. He allegedly believed they were in an irreparable financial crisis.
Amber Martin worked as a supervisor for medical laboratory scientists at the University of Iowa Health Care system.
Her manager, Connie Floerchinger, shared with Muddy River News that they were "stunned and devastated" by her passing, describing her as "kind-hearted, intelligent, and with a wonderful personality."
