Virginia crash leaves 1-year-old dead; teen driver faces DUI charges

A 1-year-old boy has died days after sustaining critical injuries in a car crash that authorities allege was caused by his 14-year-old mother driving under the influence.

The child, identified by family members as Ma’Khai, was involved in the early morning crash on March 23 in Hampton, according to local reports.

He was transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries on March 26.

Investigators say the crash occurred on Interstate 64 when the vehicle veered off the road, struck a guardrail, and crossed into a lane barrier.

Authorities allege the teen driver was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Police also reported that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, and the child was not properly secured in a car seat. The 14-year-old sustained serious injuries in the crash.

She is currently facing multiple charges, including driving under the influence, driving without a license, and a child restraint violation.

Authorities noted that additional charges may be filed following the child’s death. The investigation remains ongoing.

Family members expressed grief over the loss, remembering Ma’Khai as a deeply loved child.

“I’ve been in his life since day one. This is the hardest,” his grandmother said in an interview with a local outlet.

Despite the circumstances surrounding the crash, she also spoke about forgiveness, adding that she could not bring herself to hate the child’s mother.

Ma’Khai would have celebrated his second birthday on April 4, according to relatives.

Loved ones also shared a message urging young people to make responsible choices, emphasizing the importance of safety and accountability.

Authorities have not released the name of the teen driver due to her age.
