Dee Freeman, celebrated for her roles in The Young and the Restless and Sistas, has passed away. She was 66 years old.

The actress's death was due to stage 4 lung cancer, as stated by her publicist Desirae L. Benson in a statement. Freeman’s family confirmed the news with a post on her Instagram on Friday (April 3).

“With heavy hearts, on behalf of her family, we announce this news. Dee peacefully departed this life on April 2, after battling cancer with immense bravery,” the family captioned a photo of her.

“Our gratitude goes out to all who supported Dee during her difficult times. She was truly touched by the outpouring of love and support she received," the caption added. 

“Dee is now soaring in the heavens, continuing to be the remarkable person she always was. Rest peacefully, Dee.”

Benson described Freeman as "an individual I truly respected and admired" in her statement, lauding the actress for her "steely strength" throughout her battle with cancer.

“Despite facing stage 4 lung cancer, she met it with incredible grace and determination," Benson stated. "Dee had an understated strength that naturally earned her respect."

"Her enduring legacy lies in the positive impact she had on others, and that memory will live on forever,” she stated in conclusion.

Prior to her acting career, Freeman devoted six years to the United States Marine Corps. She made her first onscreen appearance in a 1995 episode of the ABC sitcom, Coach, as reported by Deadline.

Born in Louisiana, the actress was featured in three episodes of The Young and the Restless during 1997 and 2009. She also starred in the satirical series Pretty the Series from 2010 to 2015.

She was part of a variety of TV shows including Seinfeld, Rude Awakening, ER, The Hughleys, The X-Files, Dexter, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Do Us Part, Shameless, and NCIS: Los Angeles.
