An investigation is underway in Anderson County, South Carolina, after children playing near a creek discovered a human skull.

The incident began on 29 March, when a young boy exploring the Homeland Park area encountered the remains and brought them directly to his mother, who immediately alerted the local Sheriff’s Office.

Following the initial "human touch" of this discovery, forensic investigators descended on the Lawrence Road vicinity to conduct an extensive search. Their efforts led to the recovery of between 45 and 50 "pretty weathered" bones.

While a local coroner confirmed the remains were indeed human, they noted that the condition of the skeleton suggests they have been at the site for a significant period.

"I want to say that these remains are probably 10-plus years old because of the roots that were around the bones," the coroner explained, though they cautioned that this timeframe remains a preliminary estimate.

Although no immediate signs of trauma were visible on the skull, the Sheriff’s Office has stated that foul play has not yet been ruled out.

Teams remained on the scene for several hours to document the evidence and ensure all skeletal fragments were collected for further analysis.

The discovery has shocked the local community, as the bones were found in an area frequently used by residents for outdoor activities.

As the investigation enters its early stages, authorities are working to identify the individual and determine the cause of death.

Further updates are expected as forensic experts examine the remains to provide a clearer timeline of how long they had been resting in the South Carolina creek.
