Frankie Muniz experienced a dramatic weekend as his racing career collided—literally with his Hollywood comeback, when he crashed a Malcolm in the Middle–themed NASCAR truck just hours after the premiere of the show’s revival series.

The actor-turned-racer, 40, was competing at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee on Friday night when his Ford F-150 was involved in a multi-truck wreck with drivers Tyler Reif and Timmy Hill during the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event.

Muniz was uninjured but was forced to exit the race with a DNF (Did Not Finish) after sustaining damage to his vehicle.

The incident came shortly after Muniz attended the premiere of the Malcolm in the Middle revival, Life’s Still Unfair, marking a nostalgic return to the sitcom that made him a household name in the early 2000s.

Following the crash, reports surfaced of a tense post-race exchange between Muniz and Reif, with Muniz later claiming the driver shouted at him and called him a “lapper.”

Reflecting on the incident, Muniz defended his position on the track, saying he believed he was “fighting” fairly among competitors.

“I belong on that racetrack just as much as he does, just as much as the leaders do,” he said. “I’m not going to back down on that.”

Addressing the coincidence of the crash happening on the same day as the revival premiere, Muniz leaned into the irony with humor.

“Hopefully it got TV time,” he joked. “Hopefully, people are going to watch the Malcolm in the Middle reboot right after this race!”

The original Malcolm in the Middle aired on Fox from 2000 to 2006, and the new revival series sees Muniz reunite with original cast members including Jane Kaczmarek, Justin Berfield, Christopher Masterson, and Bryan Cranston for a four-episode continuation titled Life’s Still Unfair.

Outside of acting, Muniz has built a serious racing career, beginning in 2004 and eventually becoming a full-time NASCAR driver in 2024.

He has previously described the intense balancing act between filming and racing, saying he often flew directly from set to the track to keep both careers moving.

The revival series is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+, while Muniz continues his full-time focus on NASCAR racing.
