- The actress spoke with Demi Moore about breaking rules and overcoming private fears.
At the "Sound of a Woman" event held at 92NY in New York City on April 28, Rita Wilson shared a transformative piece of advice from Bruce Springsteen.
Speaking in conversation with Demi Moore, the 69-year-old actress and singer-songwriter recalled her initial anxiety about entering the music industry later in life.
During a discussion on the craft of composition, Wilson asked the 76-year-old rock icon how she could justify starting now when he had been writing for decades. Wilson revealed that Springsteen replied, "Because, Rita, creativity is time independent."
The Duchess of Song admitted that this perspective helped her shatter "limiting beliefs" and societal expectations.
Wilson, who is married to Tom Hanks, released her sixth studio album, "Sound of a Woman", on Friday.
Co-produced with Grammy winner Dave Cobb in Nashville, the record represents an introspective journey that Wilson found "scary" to share, given her private nature.
"When you feel compelled to say something … you have to go out into the world. It can't be held too close to you anymore," she told the audience.
Wilson emphasised that she is now ready to be a "rule breaker," embracing her new path regardless of public opinion. She stated that if even one person connects with her work, it will be enough.
Having established herself as a successful actress and producer over several decades, Wilson’s transition into a singer-songwriter marks a bold new chapter in her storied career.
She remains a prominent figure in Hollywood, balanced by her long-standing philanthropic efforts and her enduring marriage to Hanks since 1988.
