Damon Lindelof has revealed that he was removed from a planned Star Wars film after a major creative disagreement over the direction of the project, admitting that his vision ultimately “didn’t work” within the long-running franchise.

Speaking on the House of R podcast, Lindelof explained that he was initially brought on in 2022 to help develop a new installment in the Star Wars universe, working alongside writing partners Justin Britt-Gibson and Rayna McClendon during early development stages.

He said the process began with him pitching his ideas for what a Star Wars film could be, which led to him being hired to further develop the project. However, he later confirmed that the collaboration ended abruptly.

“I was fired off of a Star Wars movie,” Lindelof said, reflecting on his exit and acknowledging that the concept he proposed did not align with the expectations of the franchise.

According to Lindelof, his version of the story attempted to explore a thematic clash between what he described as “a Force of nostalgia and a Force of revision,” framing the narrative around competing interpretations of legacy and change within the Star Wars universe.

He compared the idea to a “Protestant Reformation” within the franchise, suggesting a deeper structural reinvention of its mythology.

However, he admitted that the concept ultimately failed to resonate in the way he had intended.

Lindelof also described the development process as slow and complex, with ongoing discussions around tone, canon, and how the film would connect to Episode IX or potentially launch a new trilogy.

He likened working within the franchise to steering a large tanker, noting that even small creative changes required significant time and consensus.

The screenwriter also acknowledged broader uncertainty within the Star Wars creative direction, pointing to ongoing debates about whether the franchise should focus on new characters or continue emphasizing established figures such as the Mandalorian and Grogu.

Despite his exit, Lindelof suggested the experience underscored how challenging it can be to balance bold creative ideas with the expectations of one of Hollywood’s most tightly managed film universes.
