The “Hocus Pocus” star opens up at The Abbey’s 35th anniversary celebration and reflects on community, career, and revisiting her iconic roles.

Thora Birch has publicly shared that she is bisexual, offering a rare personal insight during a milestone LGBTQ+ celebration in West Hollywood.

The 44-year-old actor made the revelation on May 20 at the 35th anniversary event for The Abbey, a landmark venue known for its long-standing support of the LGBTQ+ community.

Speaking during the event, Birch connected her identity to the neighborhood where she grew up, describing West Hollywood and The Abbey as formative influences in her life.

“As a hometown girl, I’m always here to show my support for the community, which shaped so much of who I am and my identity as well, being a bi person,” she said.

Birch, who has been married to director Michael Benton Adler since 2018, also used her appearance to reflect on the importance of community support and unity, encouraging people to lean on one another during difficult times.

“I don’t want to get too political, but find your community where you can, and stand with them… and share that love,” she said. “That’s the only way we’re going to get through all this madness.”

Beyond her personal reflections, Birch also spoke about her acting career and the lasting legacy of her 1990s roles. Best known for playing Dani in the 1993 cult classic Hocus Pocus, she said she remains open to revisiting several of her early characters.

She also referenced Teeny from Now and Then and Enid from Ghost World, suggesting interest in exploring where those characters might be today.

“There’s something nice about having them encapsulated,” she said, while also acknowledging fan curiosity about Dani’s future in particular.

Birch did not appear in Hocus Pocus 2 (2022), though she has previously expressed openness to returning for future installments of the franchise.

Most recently, she appeared in Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut The Chronology of Water, which premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, marking another step in her continued return to screen work.
