Anne Hathaway opens up about early struggles and embracing her limits
The actress reflects on early lessons that shaped her relentless work ethic
Anne Hathaway has opened up about the mindset that has guided her decades-long career, revealing that she defines herself more by her work ethic than by natural talent.
In a recent interview, the Oscar-winning actress reflected on learning early in life that success in the entertainment industry would not simply be handed to her.
Despite acknowledging her privileges growing up, Hathaway said she always understood the importance of putting in consistent effort.
“I’ve always just felt defined by my work ethic,” she shared, explaining that while talent can be limited, dedication is something entirely within her control.
For Hathaway, knowing she has given her all to a project allows her to feel at peace with the outcome.
The actress also recalled moments from her childhood that helped shape this perspective. While she explored dance at a young age, she quickly realized it did not come as naturally to her as acting or singing.
Struggling to keep up with her peers, Hathaway eventually accepted that certain paths, such as becoming a professional dancer or pop star, were not aligned with her strengths.
Referencing global superstar Beyoncé, Hathaway noted she never felt pressured to compete at that level, instead focusing on opportunities that felt more authentic to her abilities.
Acting, she said, continued to open doors in a way other pursuits did not.
That philosophy was recently put to the test in her upcoming film Mother Mary, where Hathaway takes on the role of a pop star—pushing her beyond familiar territory.
The physically demanding role required her to revisit dance training and confront limitations she had long accepted.
Describing the experience as “humbling,” Hathaway admitted the process challenged her both mentally and physically.
However, she approached the role with the same determination that has defined her career, committing fully to the preparation required.
While she acknowledged that others might have mastered the role more quickly, Hathaway emphasized that her goal was not comparison, but effort.
By the end of filming, she said, she was confident she had done everything possible to meet the demands of the role.
