Simon Cowell responds to claims he’s to blame for Liam Payne’s death

Simon Cowell has shut down claims that he played a role in Liam Payne’s tragic death.
According to Rolling Stone, the longtime music mogul addressed the backlash he’s received from people who argue he bears some responsibility because he put Payne into One Direction on The X Factor at just 16 and later signed the group to his label.
Payne died in October 2024 after falling from a balcony at a Buenos Aires hotel while under the influence of alcohol, cocaine, and prescription antidepressants.
When asked whether it was painful to see people point fingers at him, Cowell was clear.
“I don’t read any of this stuff because if I did, you would just torture yourself,” he told the outlet.
“The idea that you are essentially responsible for somebody’s life, 10 years after you’ve signed someone? You can’t do that,” he added.
Cowell also shared that he last saw Payne about a year before his death, adding that the singer seemed “in a really good place.”
