A controversial update to X (formerly Twitter), the social platform owned by Elon Musk, has triggered a storm of outrage after users discovered unexpected location labels appearing on high-profile accounts.

The new feature, quietly rolled out last week, displays additional geographic information on user profiles.

The political account @MAGANationX now shows as “Based in Eastern Europe (Non-EU),” while another long-established handle, @American, appeared as “Based in Pakistan.”

Even a Gaza-based journalist’s account suddenly displayed labels pointing to Poland and a UK app connection. With X offering no definitions for these terms, confusion only deepened.

High-follower fan accounts added fuel to the fire. A Musk-focused creator with 1.7 million followers is listed as India-based, while popular Trump-related fan pages appear to be tagged to Nigeria and Eastern Europe.

Critics have argued these tags create suspicion, fueling claims of bots, imposters, and “astroturfing.”

However, the tension escalated when X suspended the @American account and an Ivanka Trump fan page, though it remains unclear which rules were violated.

For now, X is under pressure to explain how the feature works and why so many tags appear inaccurate, raising fresh concerns over transparency and trust on the platform.
