Arenas turn to AI-powered checkout systems to cut wait times for fans
AI-powered checkout systems are becoming the newest upgrade in sports arenas
Artificial intelligence (AI)-powered checkout systems are becoming the newest upgrade in sports arenas, promising faster snack runs and fewer missed moments.
At the Rochester Americans game this week, fans were the first to try Amazon’s “Just Walk Out” technology, an AI-driven setup that lets visitors swipe their card, grab what they want, and head back to their seats without stopping at a cashier.
Arena executive director Colin Holman said the goal is simple: eliminate long lines.
With cameras tracking each selection and charging customers automatically at the exit, the AI-powered checkout systems are designed to offer a seamless, friction-free experience.
It should be noted that two concession stands at Blue Cross Arena have already adopted the technology, and reactions were mixed but mostly impressed.
Some fans have called the experience “weird but easier,” while others admitted they’d check their bank statements out of caution.
Still, many said the biggest perk was speed, no more leaving during play just to beat the crowd at concessions.
The project cost about $40,000 per stand, and Amazon reportedly approached the arena soon after VenuWorks took over management in June.
As more sports venues explore automation, AI-powered checkout systems may soon become the norm.
