Google has rolled out a new image-verification tool after AI-generated photos of Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg flooded social media, sparking major confusion online.

The development comes after images featuring Musk and Zuckerberg in unlikely settings went viral across X (formerly Twitter) and Bluesky.

While the scenes should have raised suspicions, many users struggled to tell whether the images were real.

Google confirmed that its SynthID watermark, developed earlier, can now be detected directly through Gemini.

The move allows anyone to upload a photo and check whether Google’s AI tools created it.

The invisible watermark is embedded into the pixels, giving users a reliable way to verify images made through Google systems.

However, the Alphabet-owned giant cautions that its tool can only identify AI images produced with Google technology.

The recent wave of these AI-generated images was largely driven by new systems such as Nano Banana Pro, which can generate extremely realistic scenes without visible artifacts.

That said, Google noted that the SynthID check is an important first step toward helping users separate AI fiction from reality.
