Sam Altman claims OpenAI’s upcoming product will be more ‘peaceful’ than iPhone
OpenAI CEO says company’s upcoming hardware will offer simpler experience than iPhone
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is raising intrigue after claiming the company’s upcoming device will feel “more peaceful and calm” than the iPhone.
Speaking at Emerson Collective’s Demo Day, Altman said the new OpenAI product, developed with former Apple design chief Jony Ive, will surprise people with its simplicity.
The pocket-sized device is rumoured to be screenless, marking OpenAI’s first serious push into hardware since acquiring Ive’s firm io.
While details remain under wraps, Altman and Ive focused on the device’s “vibe.” Altman said today’s technology feels chaotic and distracting, comparing it to “walking through Times Square.”
In contrast, he described the upcoming OpenAI device as evoking the tranquillity of “a cabin by a lake.”
Altman added that the goal is for the device to intelligently filter noise, use contextual awareness, and earn long-term user trust.
“You trust it over time, and it does have just this incredible contextual awareness of your whole life,” Altman added.
Meanwhile, Ive emphasised creating something sophisticated yet effortless—“almost naive in its simplicity.”
The product is expected within two years, and Altman hinted it could redefine how people experience technology.
