Ed Sheeran has finally addressed the rumours surrounding a brutally honest song he wrote about his wife, Cherry Seaborn, after fans assumed it hinted at marital issues.

Speaking at a Spotify pop-up ahead of the Capital Jingle Bell Ball, the 34-year-old explained to The Sun that people often misunderstand the emotional intensity behind his music.

For those unversed, fans have suggested that several songs on the deluxe edition of Sheeran’s new album Play contain lyrics that appear to reflect concerns about his marriage.

“Sometimes people listen to records today and assume that what that song is, is their world 100 per cent at the time. It’s very much heightened emotions,” he said.

The Grammy winner, who shares two daughters with his childhood sweetheart, clarified that he writes from emotional extremes, not based on how he feels in his everyday life.

“You never write a song on a ‘meh’ day. You always write songs like, ‘This is the most loving I’ve ever felt, this is the happiest I’ve ever felt, this is the angriest I’ve ever felt.’ They’re all big extremities — that’s what inspires the song,” he shared.

The Sapphire hitmaker added that these heightened feelings help listeners resonate with the music more deeply.

“That’s where the song exists, and that’s why people connect to it — because people also have these big feelings. For me, songs only ever get created in those moments of big extremes,” Sheeran explained.

Ed Sheeran and Cherry Seaborn tied the knot in 2019 in a small ceremony near the singer's estate in Suffolk, England.
