Veteran Scottish comedian Stanley Baxter has died at the age of 99, his friend and biographer Brian Beacom has confirmed, according to the BBC.

The much-loved actor and comedian passed away on Thursday at Denville Hall in north London, a care home for members of the entertainment industry. He had been living there since late 2023 and was only months away from celebrating his 100th birthday.

Born in Glasgow, Baxter became one of Britain’s most admired comic talents. He was known for his sharp impressions - boldly taking on figures as varied as the Queen and the Pope.

His major television break came in 1959 with the BBC’s satirical programme On The Bright Side. Just a few years later, The Stanley Baxter Show, which ran from 1963 to 1971, made him a household name.

Baxter also fronted several big-budget television specials, including the much-loved Stanley Baxter’s Christmas Box.
