David Letterman is sharing his thoughts on the state of late-night TV a decade after stepping away from his longtime hosting duties.

The 76-year-old comedy legend appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week, where he opened up about the pressures today’s late-night hosts face as Donald Trump continues to target comedians who joke about him, as per Parade.

Letterman didn’t hold back when discussing Trump’s feud with the format, saying comics should always feel free to make fun of anyone.

He called Trump an “easy target” because, in his view, the former president is a “fool,” and said comedians have every right to push back.

Despite praising hosts like Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers for what he described as their ‘masterful job’ navigate the political climate, Letterman admitted he’s relieved to no longer be in the spot.

“No, I’m so glad to be out from under this mess,” he told Kimmel, adding that today’s late-night voices are “defending democracy” with their work.

He also acknowledged the role of shows like Saturday Night Live, saying these platforms are essential “in a democracy that’s seemingly this crippled.”
