SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin offered a brief update on contract negotiations with the major studios during Sunday night’s Actor Awards.

Addressing the audience, Astin praised the union’s solidarity during a challenging period. “Our labor solidarity carried us through a very hard time,” he said, thanking fellow entertainment unions for their support.

He confirmed that SAG-AFTRA has resumed talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

“We are back in negotiations with the AMPTP. Everyone is working very hard to achieve a solid deal that we can all be proud of.”

As chair of the negotiating committee, Astin emphasised the importance of member backing.

“The support shown in this room and across the industry means everything … what we are doing is giving our members a fighting chance to provide for themselves and for their families and allow us all to work in an environment that respects our dignity and the lives and health of our colleagues.”

Both sides agreed to a media blackout, limiting public details about the discussions, which resumed February 9.

Health and pension funding remain central issues in this bargaining cycle, as union benefit plans have faced financial strain in recent years.

Astin also acknowledged “what’s happening in the news,” offering “a sincere prayer for peace,” before reminding viewers that SAG-AFTRA represents members across 25 locals nationwide.

The union’s current contract expires June 30.
