How you choose to spend your first few moments each day can profoundly shape your emotional resilience and focus. Dr Daniel Amen, a psychiatrist with over two decades of experience, recently shared his essential morning rituals on Instagram to help followers cultivate a balanced mindset.

He suggests that mental health starts with a conscious affirmation: “Today is going to be a great day. Get your mindset going,” Dr Amen says.

Beyond mental preparation, he advocates for physical engagement with the environment. He suggests stepping outdoors to soak up natural light and invigorate the body.

“And then go outside, unless it's super cold, and get some sunlight. Go for a short walk just to increase your metabolism. Have a big glass of water. Put half a lemon in it. It helps to detoxify your body,” he adds.

These simple steps of hydration and movement act as a catalyst for both physical and mental energy.

Dietary choices are equally vital in his routine. Dr Amen prioritises stable energy levels by opting for specific macronutrients early on.

“I start virtually every day with protein and healthy fat. For me, I like three eggs, and then I'll make a protein shake a little bit later in the morning,” he explains.

He is also a proponent of intermittent fasting to allow the body time to recover between meals. To maintain long-term wellness, he encourages a simple daily filter for every decision: “Always ask yourself this question: Is this good for my brain or bad for it?”
