Jeannie Mai reflects on divorce pain and new approach to love
The TV star insists she won’t compromise herself for a partner
Jeannie Mai has opened up about her return to the dating scene, revealing that her approach to romance has shifted dramatically since her divorce from rapper Jeezy in 2024.
In a new YouTube video, the 47-year-old Daytime Emmy winner described dating in Los Angeles as “a full-on sport,” noting the challenges of navigating a city where many are emotionally unavailable.
“This time, I have standards,” Mai said, emphasizing that she is prioritizing her own needs over the expectations of others.
“I’m not trying to be chosen. I’m deciding. I’m deciding if I like me when I’m with you. Am I fully me when I’m with you?” she added, underscoring her commitment to authenticity and self-respect in relationships.
Mai also revealed that it has been some time since she has felt fully herself around a partner. “Being in my presence is a privilege,” she said, sharing insights from her new self-care journey, which includes documenting solo dates in her vlog.
“I’m not shrinking my shine to make someone else comfortable. The most important takeaway is that I will never abandon myself again.”
The TV star has also reflected candidly on the emotional toll of her divorce.
She described the split as one of the most painful experiences of her life, telling the Question Everything podcast: “Divorce is heartbreaking, no matter what. It’s one of the greatest pains that any human has to endure, honestly. Divorce is just it’s experiencing death alive.”
Mai married Jeezy in March 2021 and filed for divorce in 2023. Her recent comments reveal a renewed sense of self-awareness and empowerment as she navigates life and love post-divorce, determined to maintain her independence and emotional well-being while exploring romance once again.
