Obesity is increasingly linked to serious gynaecological health concerns, with research highlighting a significant connection to ovarian cancer.

Dr Ritu Dave, a cancer physician at M|O|C Cancer Care in Pune, discussed these findings. She explained that excess weight alters fundamental bodily functions.

Dr Ritu Dave said, “Excess body fat doesn’t just add kilos, it changes how your body functions. Obesity can lead to hormonal imbalance, chronic inflammation and insulin resistance, all of which create an environment where cancer cells may thrive.”

Key biological factors include:

  • Hormonal imbalance: Fat tissue produces active hormones that can stimulate cancer growth.
  • Chronic inflammation: Persistent inflammatory signals from adipose tissue fuel cellular damage.
  • Metabolic syndrome: A cluster of conditions including high blood pressure and blood sugar.

A study led by the Indian Council of Medical Research, published on 10 October 2025, revealed that women with metabolic syndrome are nearly three times more likely to develop ovarian cancer.

How can women reduce their risk of ovarian cancer?

Despite the mounting evidence, awareness regarding these specific risk factors remains low. Data suggests only 28 per cent of women in India understand the link between obesity and ovarian health.

Dr Ritu Dave noted, “Early detection is key, but women need to understand what puts them at risk in the first place.”

To mitigate these risks, the following proactive steps are recommended:

  • Maintain a healthy weight through consistent weight management.
  • Engage in regular daily physical activity.
  • Prioritise balanced nutrition and mindful eating.
  • Implement effective stress management techniques.

By addressing obesity as a modifiable risk factor, women can significantly lower their chances of developing ovarian cancer and other serious metabolic diseases.
