A Canadian tourist was tragically killed on Monday, after a gunman opened fire at the renowned Teotihuacán pyramids in Mexico.

The unidentified assailant launched the attack at the ancient archaeological site situated north of Mexico City before taking his own life.

Mexico's Security Cabinet confirmed via social media that a firearm, a bladed weapon, and live cartridges were recovered from the scene.

In addition to the deceased, six people sustained injuries during the incident. Authorities from the State of Mexico reported that four individuals suffered gunshot wounds, while two others were injured in falls during the ensuing chaos.

According to the Associated Press, the wounded include visitors from Colombia and Russia, as well as a second Canadian national. The current condition of those hospitalised remains unclear as investigations continue.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the tragedy, stating, "What happened today in Teotihuacán deeply pains us. I express my most sincere solidarity with the affected individuals and their families."

The President confirmed her office is coordinating with the Canadian embassy to provide necessary support.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Anita Anand, also condemned the "horrific act of gun violence," noting that her thoughts remain with the victims' loved ones.

Teotihuacán, a significant pre-Columbian city, remains one of the most visited locations in the country, attracting millions of international visitors annually.

The site is currently under heavy security as officials conduct a thorough investigation into the motives behind this rare and violent assault on a major cultural landmark.
