Grandson of Mike Krzyzewski charged with DWI following fatal Durham collision
Records reveal Savarino's breathalyser test showed a zero point one one blood alcohol content
Joseph Savarino, the grandson of legendary Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, has been charged with driving while impaired (DWI) following a fatal collision in Durham, North Carolina.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, resulted in the death of 15-year-old Jack O’Shea. According to police reports, Savarino's SUV struck the teenager while he was riding an e-bike at the intersection of Cole Mill Road and Wyndham Lane.
Court records indicate that Savarino, the son of Krzyzewski’s daughter Debbie, underwent a breathalyser test around 12:45 a.m. on Sunday, which revealed a blood alcohol content of $0.11$.
This is notably above the legal limit of $0.08$. Savarino reportedly admitted to officers that he had been consuming alcohol before operating the vehicle.
On Monday, Judge Kevin Jones ordered Savarino to surrender his driver’s licence and set his bond at $100,000.
The victim’s mother, Allison Bickel O’Shea, shared a poignant tribute to her son on social media, describing him as a "fearless and handsome baby boy."
Jack had spent his final day attending confession and playing two high school baseball games before the accident occurred near his family’s neighbourhood. He died at the scene.
This is the second time a grandson of the retired coach has faced such charges; Joseph's brother, Michael Savarino, pleaded guilty to a DWI in 2022. Joseph Savarino is scheduled for his next court appearance on the morning of 20 May.
