Kelly Ripa is taking a temporary break from Live with Kelly and Mark as she recovers from a painful gum graft procedure, with husband and co-host Mark Consuelos revealing she's under strict doctor's orders not to speak.

During Monday's episode of the daytime talk show, Consuelos explained that the Emmy-winning host underwent surgery to treat receding gums and improve her oral health.

While reassuring viewers that Ripa is recovering well, he admitted the healing process has been more difficult than expected.

"Kelly sends her love," Consuelos said, adding that she had undergone gum graft surgery and would need to follow detailed recovery instructions, including avoiding conversation, eating only soft foods and steering clear of straws.

The actor recalled that Ripa's dentist had recommended the procedure five years ago, but she delayed it, joking at the time that she didn't expect to still be on television years later.

Guest co-host Kevin Jonas quipped that not being allowed to talk was likely the toughest part of the recovery for the famously chatty television personality.

Consuelos also shared a humorous moment from home, revealing Ripa asked him to inspect the surgical area, though he refused to pull down her lip and instead assured her everything looked fine.

Despite her famously high pain tolerance, Consuelos admitted the procedure has been painful for his wife, saying that if Ripa was feeling discomfort, "I know it's bad."

A representative for Live confirmed Ripa will be away from the show for one week while she recovers. Kevin Jonas, Mila Kunis, Pamela Adlon and Scott Foley are scheduled to fill in as guest co-hosts during her absence.
