King Frederik X ascends to the throne as Denmark's Queen steps down:
Denmark welcomes a new era as King Frederik X ascends to the throne, succeeding his mother, Queen Margrethe II, who surprised the nation by gracefully stepping down on New Year's Eve.
This marks a historic moment, as it's the first time in almost 900 years that a Danish monarch willingly relinquishes power.
The formal abdication occurred during a parliamentary meeting, without the traditional coronation ceremony.
Despite freezing temperatures, a large crowd gathered in Copenhagen to witness Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen officially declare King Frederik X.
The newly crowned royal couple then traveled by horse carriage to their residence at Amalienborg.
