Ed Sheeran opens up about balancing family life and touring in new song
Ed Sheeran shares two daughters Lyra and Jupiter with wife Cherry Seaborn
Ed Sheeran reflected on how he balances fatherhood, marriage, and life on the road in the deluxe edition of his new album, Play.
The 34-year-old singer appears to address the emotional strain that his three-year + - = ÷ x Mathematics Tour placed on his relationship with his daughters, Lyra and Jupiter, in the newly released track Regrets.
Sheeran sings, “You’re too young to understand that Daddy’s coming home/Every time I leave the house, you think I’m forever gone, guess it’s from the hundred calls, goodnights on the telephone/See this tour, I’ve gotta get it done, but why though?/Missed out on so much, I really need to make it up.”
Another new song, War Problems, hints at challenges within his marriage to Cherry Seaborn, as the Perfect singer admits, “Every day we feel deflated/Tryna roll with all the changes/Reality of what we’ve created… There’s no one above or below you, you are all I want/But I feel that it’s not enough, to just offer you my love.”
Despite the emotional themes in his music, the father-of-two recently revealed that he has achieved a healthy rhythm between touring and family life.
Speaking on Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals, he shared, “My girls have been on tour with me since [the] start of Mathematics… I feel like my life only works when we’re together.”
Ed Sheeran added that touring no longer feels like an “obligation,” explaining that he now structures his schedule around family, “If I’m like, ‘I only want to play Saturdays,’ that’s what I do… it’s kind of the perfect balance.”
