James Cameron is ready to take The Terminator in a bold new direction and that means even leaving Arnold Schwarzenegger behind.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker confirmed that Schwarzenegger will not appear in the next Terminator movie, which Cameron is working on a fresh reboot that separates from the original timeline.

“I can safely say he won’t be [in it],” Cameron said, explaining that it’s time for a new generation of characters.

He added that Arnold’s return in Terminator: Dark Fate felt like the right way to close that chapter. “It was a great finish to him playing the T-800.”

Cameron said the future of Terminator needs to move beyond familiar faces and focus on better conception.

“There needs to be a broader interpretation of Terminator,” he shared, adding that he wants to explore ideas audiences aren’t expecting.

While Cameron previously admitted he struggled to shape a new story as real-world AI advances accelerated, he remains committed to revisiting the franchise.

“I’m working on it,” Cameron said, noting the challenge is staying ahead of real technological developments while still delivering science fiction.
