Kate Winslet opened up about her life after her famous movie, Titanic, was released.

The Reader actress described those days as “horrific,” and recalled she was being followed by paparazzi, having her phone tapped, and journalists searching through her rubbish.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, Winslet said her life was “totally turned upside down” after the 1997 film and that she “wasn’t ready for that world.”

She said long-standing criticism of her appearance intensified after the film’s release, adding that she had been called “blubber” as a child and later told she would have to “settle for the fat girl parts.” Between the ages of 15 and 19, she said she was “barely eating.”

Winslet said magazine images of her were altered without her consent. “I didn’t look like that,” she said, adding she did not want young women to believe the images were real.

Asked how she coped, Winslet said: “A good meal, a shared conversation, a cup of coffee, some Radiohead and a good poo.”
