James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash launched with $36.5 million in domestic ticket sales on Friday from 3,800 North American theaters.

According to Varitey the third installment in Disney’s sci-fi franchise is projected to earn $85 million to $90 million domestically by Sunday. Including international markets, the film could reach up to $365 million worldwide by the end of its opening weekend.

The debut is tracking above the original Avatar’s $77 million domestic opening but below The Way of Water, which opened to $134 million as per reports.

Both previous films went on to surpass $2 billion globally, with the 2009 original finishing at $2.92 billion, still the highest-grossing film of all time.

Second place went to Angel Studios’ animated film David, which earned $9.6 million on Friday and is headed for a $25 million weekend.

Moreover, Lionsgate’s The Housemaid opened third with $8 million, followed by The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants at $6 million.
