Priyanka Chopra believes theaters have a future despite streaming’s dominance
The 'Baywatch' star admits moving to Hollywood in her 30s was 'terrifying' despite her success in India
Actress Priyanka Chopra says she believes streaming platforms and traditional cinemas can coexist, insisting that both mediums bring unique strengths to modern entertainment.
The 43-year-old star spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, noting that while streaming has reshaped the industry, theatrical filmmaking still holds an important place.
“Streaming has changed the game for entertainment, for sure, and it’s not going anywhere. I do not think theatrical is going anywhere either,” Chopra said. “Both mediums can be beautiful in their own way.”
Chopra pointed to her upcoming action-adventure film The Bluff as an example of cinema’s enduring appeal.
“We shot 100 per cent on location, and we used old-school filmmaking. We had all practical sets that we could work and interact with. So filmmakers will pick and choose the medium that they want to use,” she explained.
The actress also praised the growing accessibility of global entertainment. “I love the fact that there are so many tools available for audiences to access entertainment from around the world. I love the fact that subtitled entertainment can actually win best picture today,” she added.
Chopra, who was born in India and is now based in the United States, reflected on the challenges she faced breaking into Hollywood.
She admitted that preconceived notions about her background and accent created hurdles when she first arrived in Los Angeles in 2013.
“People would be like, ‘Oh, you speak English well.’ There was a preconceived notion of me whenever I went in for a meeting before I walked into the room,” she told Variety.
The actress described the transition as “terrifying” despite her financial security and established career in India.
“To restart your career in your 30s is terrifying. I was secure. I was doing well financially. I was established. And I chose to blow it up,” Chopra said, highlighting the risks she took to pursue success in Hollywood.
