Harry Styles surprised Saturday Night Live viewers during Ryan Gosling’s hosting stint on Saturday night, March 7, just one week before he is set to host the iconic sketch series himself.

The Aperture singer, returning to the show for a brief cameo, was spotted in the audience during Gosling’s opening monologue.

“Is that Harry Styles?” Gosling asked as the camera panned to the applause from the crowd. When Gosling quipped, “What are you doing here, man?” Styles replied casually, “Well, I’m hosting next week and it’s been a while, so I just wanted to watch, get a feel for it.”

Gosling praised Styles for his “professionalism” and jokingly promoted his upcoming movie, Project Harry Styles, calling it “like E.T. meets Interstellar… kind of double that,” before trailing off as the camera cut to Styles.

“I’ve always loved making films about space. It’s just something about them gives me perspective,” Styles said, listening quietly from his seat.

The lighthearted exchange continued with Gosling teasing Styles about his effortless cool.

“Could you listen less cool? I think your coolness is becoming a bit of an issue,” he joked. Later, dancers dressed as aliens performed to Project Hail Mary’s score, prompting Gosling to joked, “Some have said it’s called Sign of the Times, and oh my God, it’s by Harry Styles. Now I gotta sing it in front of him.” Gosling then delivered a hesitant rendition of Styles’ hit before segueing into the I’m Just Ken number from Barbie.

This week, Gorillaz served as the musical guests on SNL, while Styles is set to perform double duty next week as both host and musical guest, marking his much-anticipated return to the show.
