Beauty influencer Amber Pitkin has shared the unexpected side of pregnancy that left her “unable to recognize” herself.

The 31-year-old, who splits her time between Dubai and London, told People that around 14 weeks into her first pregnancy, she began noticing subtle shifts in her face. By the fourth month, the changes had become more dramatic.

“Not just my nose but my lips and even my eyes. It was quite a shock, I felt like I didn’t recognize myself,” Pitkin said.

“It’s an overwhelming feeling to know so many changes are happening to your body and you have no control over it.”

For Pitkin, whose career revolves around beauty content and close-up filming, the swelling felt amplified under studio lights and high-definition lenses. “At first, it really knocked my confidence. I didn’t want to look at myself on camera anymore. I just wanted to hide,” she admitted.

Health experts note that hormonal shifts during pregnancy can dilate blood vessels, leading to facial swelling, including in the nose.

Pitkin said she initially struggled to accept the changes but is now learning to embrace them.

“I’ve had to come to terms with the changes instead of fighting them. This season is temporary, and my body is doing something amazing,” she said.

“At the same time, I still do small things that help me feel like myself — getting my hair done or trying different facial techniques. Those little things give me confidence.”

Pitkin also hopes her openness will normalize conversations about the challenging parts of pregnancy.

“There’s this pressure to only speak positively about pregnancy because it’s a blessing, but being honest about the parts that are difficult doesn’t mean you love your baby any less,” she explained.

Sharing her experience has helped Pitkin connect with other pregnant women online.

“I have never received so many lovely supportive messages from other mothers; it’s been amazing to see such kindness and empathy from other women,” she said.

As she navigates the remainder of her pregnancy, Pitkin is redefining confidence and self-worth beyond appearance.

“Give yourself grace. Your body is doing something extraordinary. It’s okay to have moments where you don’t feel like yourself, but don’t let that define your value,” she told People

“This phase is temporary, but the strength you’re building will stay with you.”
