Ruth Gemmell reveals 'Bridgerton' scene that made her go home and cry
Bridgerton star Ruth Gemmell discusses the 'maturity' of series four
The Bridgerton star Ruth Gemmell has offered a candid reflection on the emotional challenges of portraying her character’s evolving romantic life in the hit Regency drama.
Gemmell, who portrays the matriarch Violet Bridgerton, admitted to an initial period of distress upon discovering she was required to film an intimate scene with Daniel Francis’s character, Lord Marcus Anderson, during the show’s fourth series.
“I was a little bit shocked. I was in a costume fitting, and I realised that I was being fitted for something that I had no idea was going to happen. I went home and cried,” she confessed to Ciné-Télé-Revue.
Despite her early trepidation, the actress praised the production team for their mature and humorous approach to the sensitive material, noting that “low lighting” helped set the appropriate mood.
Gemmell emphasised that the scene was handled with a level of decorum suitable for her character’s seniority.
“Thankfully, we tackled this one in a slightly different way to the kids of the show, because I don't think anyone would want to watch that really. I was a bit shocked,” she added.
The scene depicts the widowed Violet finding affection years after the death of her husband, Edmund, a journey Gemmell believes is essential for modern television. She maintains that showing older characters experiencing romance is vital for representation.
“I think it is important. We don't die after a certain age, so it's quite nice to kind of represent that,” she concluded.
