Tom Cruise outshines Spielberg in work ethic, director admits
Collaborators praise Cruise as hardworking, generous, and dedicated on every project
Steven Spielberg is giving credit where it’s due, admitting that Tom Cruise outworked him on set during their collaborations.
The 79-year-old director reflected on working with Cruise, 63, at a keynote event at SXSW, discussing their experiences on Minority Report and War of the Worlds with journalist Sean Fennessey.
“Tom Cruise showed up every morning when I showed up,” Spielberg said. “I show up before the crew, sometimes at 6:30 in the morning.
"On Minority Report and War of the Worlds, Tom would insist on getting there when I got there so we would map out the whole day… which was really helpful for me.”
Cruise’s legendary work ethic has long been recognized in Hollywood.
In a May 2025 interview with People, the actor explained his commitment to preparing for roles: “I will learn a skill, and I know eventually I’m going to use it in a movie.”
He described himself as “constantly training” in everything from piano and dance to parachuting and flying airplanes and helicopters. “The wonderful thing is you’re never there. It can always be better,” he said.
Spielberg’s praise aligns with comments from other collaborators, including Christopher McQuarrie, Joseph Kosinski, and Glen Powell.
McQuarrie described Cruise on action sequences as “basically a one-man film crew: operating the camera, acting, and flying.” Kosinski, who directed Top Gun: Maverick, highlighted Cruise’s role in designing the co-stars’ training course, noting, “He’s a licensed aerobatic pilot and he was thrown into the deep end when he did the first Top Gun without any training, so he knew they would need to work up to that level.”
Powell reflected on Cruise’s professionalism, saying, “He’s as great as people think he is.
He’s as nice, he’s as hardworking, he’s as generous, he’s as available. He’s the man.”
Cruise rose to global stardom through films such as Top Gun, Rain Man, and the Mission: Impossible series, building a reputation for performing his own stunts and delivering blockbuster action roles while also earning acclaim in dramatic parts.
Across decades, he has maintained both critical recognition and box office appeal, cementing his place as one of Hollywood’s most enduring stars.
