Expert explains how to make small urban living spaces appear significantly larger
Beige and pastel furniture pieces blend seamlessly to reduce overwhelming visual distractions
Furniture determines both the aesthetic and the sense of space within a room, acting as the soul of any interior. Lokendra Ranawat, CEO and Co-Founder of Wooden Street, shared practical tips with HT Lifestyle regarding space-efficient solutions for urban homes.
He noted that compact living is a growing trend in India, but small spaces do not require sacrificing style. To achieve a balance, he suggested choosing furniture with a combination of functionality and visual lightness.
His hacks for maximising small areas include:
- Multi-purpose furniture: Use bedding with hidden storage, foldable dining tables, or storage ottomans.
- Light and neutral tones: Stick to beige, white, and pastels to reflect light and create a cohesive look.
- Visual lightness: Select pieces that allow light to pass through, reducing the visual weight of the room.
Invest in foldable or expandable pieces
Fusion design offers flexibility for changing needs. Wall desks, foldable chairs, and extendable tables adapt to the room at any given time.
Furthermore, glass-top tables and mirrors reflect light, providing an illusion of depth. Ranawat added, “Small living spaces do not have to mean sacrificing design or comfort,” provided the layout remains intentional and uncluttered.
Do not overfill the space
The most common error in interior design is overcrowding with unnecessary items. For smaller floor plans, it is best to select a few basic, high-utility pieces.
Ranawat urged prioritising practicality, stating that the "less is more" principle is vital for furniture placement.
By choosing simple, functional, and light-reflecting items, homeowners can turn a bland shell into a warm, inviting, and seemingly expansive living area.
