The heavy, uncomfortable feeling of being bloated or gassy can be frustrating and difficult to ignore. Dr Joseph Salhab, a Florida-based gastroenterologist and health content creator, recently highlighted a simple trick that may help.

In an Instagram video shared on Tuesday, he explained that abdominal massage can support movement along the gastrointestinal tract.

"This may be especially helpful for some people with IBS, constipation, or trapped gas by helping move things along in the direction your colon naturally travels," the expert noted.

How to do it?

To achieve the best results, the doctor recommends beginning in a relaxed, lying-down position. This ensures the abdominal muscles are not tensed during the process. He suggested the following steps for the massage:

  • Lie down or lean back and relax your belly.
  • Start on the lower right side of your abdomen.
  • Use gentle but firm pressure and make slow circles.
  • Move upward toward the right ribcage.
  • Go across the upper belly.
  • Move down the left side.
  • Do it for about 1 to 3 minutes, especially when you feel gassy or constipated.

How does it help?

By following this specific path, individuals are mimicking the natural movement of the colon. Dr Salhab explained, "What this does is, this can help massage gas and stool throughout your colon."

This technique provides a non-invasive way to manage digestive health. He further added, "And if you're constipated, this can actually help you have a bowel movement."

Such methods offer a practical approach for those seeking a sense of lightness and relief from daily discomfort.
