While society celebrates trailblazers, a psychological oversight often lurks beneath the hustle. Ragini Rao, psychotherapist and co-founder of InfinumGrowth, has identified a recurring pattern called "The High-Functioning Woman Script."

She explained that this is a learned role where competence becomes identity, and rest carries guilt. "When competence transitions from being a skill to a part of identity, then self-worth gets adversely affected," Rao noted. For these women, self-esteem plummets if they are not constantly productive.

This script is often an unconscious life plan shaped by childhood rewards for being "strong" or "reliable." Women living inside this script carry an internal rule: "I must hold everything together."

They become the perennial fixers and planners, but their mental health often bears the brunt of this pressure.

According to the report, these individuals were frequently the "mature child" or the helper that everyone could rely on, leading to a deep-seated need to meet external expectations at the cost of their own desires.

How to stop over-functioning?

To overcome this learned script and improve personal growth, the psychotherapist suggested several intentional shifts in mindset. Breaking a lifelong pattern of conditioning requires conscious effort and the following steps:

  • Separate identity from competence: Performance is what you do, not who you are.
  • Notice guilt without obeying it: Treat guilt as information rather than an instruction.
  • Choose consciously: Move from automatic over-functioning to making intentional choices.
  • Rest, delegate, or ask for support.

Rao emphasised that when identity is detached from performance, rest stops feeling like failure and becomes a healthy choice.

By unlearning these rigid roles, women can finally prioritise their well-being without the weight of undeserved shame.
