Staff shocked as woman found dead in discount store freezer
Investigators said her cause of death has not yet been determined
A death investigation is underway in Miami, Florida after a woman was found dead inside a freezer at a renowned discount store.
According to the Miami Herald, police said they were called to the discount store in the Little Havana neighbourhood early Sunday morning after an employee made the grim find. Officers later identified the woman as 32-year-old Helen Massiell Garay Sanchez.
Police believe Sanchez walked into the store late Saturday night shortly before closing, didn’t buy anything, and then headed to a freezer in a back storage area, where she was found the following day. Why she entered the freezer and what happened remains unclear.
As of Monday, investigators said her cause of death has not yet been determined, with police stressing the case is still under investigation, CBS News Miami reported.
Sanchez’s family described her as a physician originally from Nicaragua and a devoted mother of two. A GoFundMe page set up by relatives says the family hopes to return her body to Nicaragua for burial, with donations covering transportation and funeral costs.
“Her strength, warmth, and unwavering love for her family will always be remembered,” her family wrote.
For now, police continue to piece together how a late-night visit to a bargain store ended in tragedy.
