A former US Marine has landed in serious trouble after the FBI said he was on his way to attack federal immigration officers in New Orleans.

28-year-old Micah James Legnon from New Iberia, Louisiana, was arrested on December 12 after agents tracked his movements along Highway 90, according to federal court documents unsealed this week.

Investigators say Legnon had been under surveillance because of alleged links to an extremist group Turtle Island Liberation Front involved in plotting bomb attacks elsewhere in the country.

The FBI said agents watched as Legnon loaded an assault rifle and tactical gear into his vehicle before heading towards New Orleans, where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection officers have been operating in recent weeks.

A search of Legnon’s home uncovered sniper and SWAT training manuals, multiple assault-style weapons and large amounts of ammunition, the FBI said. When agents stopped his vehicle, they reportedly found an assault rifle, a pistol, body armour and even a gas canister.

The investigation remains ongoing.
