Princess Diana's brother concludes third divorce; ex-wife retains noble title despite dispute
Charles Edwards Maurice Spencer has finalised agreement with Karen Spencer
Princess Diana’s sibling, Earl Spencer, has completed his third divorce following two years of challenging legal disputes.
Charles Edwards Maurice Spencer has finalised the agreement with Karen Spencer, aged 53. The court proceedings detailed the end of the 13-year union after Countess Spencer shared her side in the High Court.
She alleged that the Earl was involved in an affair and claimed that he dissolved the marriage through a text message, accusations that Earl Spencer has refuted.
They decided that Countess Spencer can retain her noble title, as it was acknowledged she deserved it for her efforts to enhance the estate at Althorp, which is also Princess Diana's resting place.
The divorce proceedings wrapped up in December, although financial arrangements have not yet been concluded.
If Earl Spencer marries again, his subsequent wife will take on the title of The Countess Spencer, while Karen will remain Countess Spencer, omitting the "the" prefix.
A determination is still pending regarding the amount the Earl will provide to his former spouse in relation to litigation initiated by his partner, Professor Cat Jarman.
The dispute was concluded in December after Ms. Jarman filed a lawsuit against Karen for “improper use of personal information.”
The Norwegian archaeologist, who presents a podcast with the Earl, alleged Countess Spencer disclosed her multiple sclerosis diagnosis to others without consent.
Karen's legal team resolved the matter outside of court without acknowledgment of responsibility, with the court deciding that part of the expenses will be covered by Earl Spencer through the divorce settlement.
