The family of Christa Bauer Gilley has expressed their devastation after her husband, Lee Gilley, fled the United States weeks before his scheduled capital murder trial.

Mr Gilley, 39, was set to appear in court this June for the October 2024 death of his pregnant wife. However, according to a federal complaint, he allegedly cut off his court-ordered ankle monitor on 1 May 2026 and fled to Canada before flying to Italy, where he is currently in custody.

Tim Ballengee, the attorney representing the victim's family, told reporters that the escape was a shocking blow to those seeking justice.

"Obviously, it was devastating to the family, and I think that they were hoping to have the trial and to have him held accountable," Mr Ballengee said.

Authorities allege that Mr Gilley arrived at Milan’s Malpensa Airport using a forged Belgian identity under the name Lejeune Jean Luc Olivier. He was denied entry by the Milan Border Police and is now seeking asylum while in detention.

The case began in October 2024 when Houston police responded to a reported suicide at the couple's home. Although Mr Gilley claimed his 38-year-old wife died from an overdose, an autopsy later ruled her death a homicide caused by neck compression.

Mr Gilley's attorney, Dick DeGuerin, described the new federal flight charges as a customary method to grant U.S. Marshals international jurisdiction.

The family now faces a period of uncertainty as they await the legal process required to return the defendant to Texas for trial.
