A 65-year-old Los Angeles nanny has been arrested on allegations of physically abusing an infant, according to authorities in California.

The Santa Monica Police Department said officers were first alerted to a suspected child abuse case on April 7 after a report from a Los Angeles-area hospital. Investigators later determined that the infant had allegedly suffered physical abuse.

Authorities identified the suspect as Carolina Cobian, who was arrested on April 15 on felony child abuse charges, according to jail records cited in local reports. Cobian was later released on bail.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office subsequently filed one felony count of child endangerment against Cobian on April 24. She is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on May 28.

Police have not publicly released additional details about the infant’s condition or the specific circumstances surrounding the alleged abuse, citing the sensitive nature of the investigation.

Investigators are now asking the public for assistance in identifying any other families who may have employed Cobian as a nanny, caregiver, or childcare provider.

Authorities are also encouraging anyone with information relevant to the case to contact law enforcement.

In a public statement, the Santa Monica Police Department shared guidance for parents and guardians on recognising potential signs of child abuse.

Officials advised caregivers to conduct unannounced check-ins, establish clear expectations with childcare providers, and encourage age-appropriate conversations with children about safety and reporting concerns.

Police noted that warning signs of abuse can include unexplained injuries, sudden behavioral changes, fearfulness around a caregiver, reluctance to be left alone with someone, or explanations that do not align with observed circumstances.

Authorities emphasised that any immediate concerns regarding a child’s safety should be reported to law enforcement without delay.
