Police in California took into custody 40-year-old man accused of killing a 19-year-old nursing student
Police in California took into custody a 40-year-old man accused of killing a 19-year-old nursing student as he reversed out of a spot at a mall home to Five Below and Trader Joe's.
Desean Edwards is charged with vehicular manslaughter due to gross negligence in the passing of Grace Edwards (unrelated), as reported by the Long Beach Police Department.
The tragic event took place just before 4pm on November 2 in the lot of the mall on the 2200 block of Bellflower Boulevard. Grace Edwards was walking with her mother when she was struck by the driver backing up, as stated by police.
Officers noted that “distracted driving is suspected as a factor,” though they’ve yet to specify how Desean Edwards was inattentive.
Upon arrival, authorities found Grace Edwards with injuries to her upper body. She was quickly transported by paramedics to the medical center, where she passed away several days afterward.
Desean Edwards was detained on Tuesday and held with a bail set at $75,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on May 13.
Supporters of the family initiated a GoFundMe to aid her relatives.
"Grace was a lively and spirited 19-year-old. She was a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, friend, and nursing student. Her kindness affected countless lives, especially young families as she cared for many children at her church and within her community," the fundraising page states. "Grace was not just beautiful, but also kind, intelligent, and consistently exemplified what it means to love and serve others."
Just prior to the unfortunate incident, Grace Edwards had discussed with her parents her desire to become an organ donor.
"On Sunday, November 9, amid the hospital staff and many dear friends and family, Grace journeyed to the operating room surrounded by compassion through an Honor Walk, continuing her legacy of helping others even in passing," the fundraising page details.
"We find solace in the knowledge that her influence will endure, bringing life to others. Given Grace's deep affection for children, it is meaningful that her heart was given to an 8-year-old."
