In a striking new cover for Sports Illustrated, the actress appeared alongside Martin and revealed why portraying the fighter in her upcoming biopic has become the most meaningful project of her career.

“This is the most important film I’ve ever made,” Sweeney said, reflecting on the responsibility of bringing Martin’s life to the screen.

The actress, who has been promoting the film across social platforms, expanded on that sentiment in a recent Instagram post explaining why the story goes far beyond the ring.

“For 20 years, Christy Martin was one of the strongest women in the world inside the ring,” she wrote.

“But at home, she was abused and nearly killed by the man who claimed to love her.”

Moreover, Sweeney emphasized that the film isn’t simply a sports drama. It’s a portrait of survival.

“It’s about identity, survival, and the unimaginable strength it takes to reclaim your life after someone has taken everything from you,” she said.

She hopes the film reaches victims of domestic abuse who feel unseen.

“We’re here to stand with survivors,” she added. “And if this film helps even one person feel seen, understood, or less alone, then we’ve done something that matters.”
